In many cases both should be consider. Personally I would lean towards season stats, but they do get brownie points for who they are or what they've done.
Another thing I've noticed is that they start the All-Star voting so early in the season. I think a lot people will vote by name early, but as time goes on and players performances start to take shape by June, I think a lot fans start to vote more based on season stats. It's really hard to vote for someone based on season stats on May 1st.

Season. If you want to, I think it's also a good idea to vote in guys who didn't get there last year, but had awesome second halves.
So a season; a whole one, but beginning after last year's all-star game up until this year's. This would give you a little bit larger sample size to help weed out the J.J. Hardy's, and gives you a little room to weight a players past performance.
The real answer is the what have you done for me lately argument. For instance Barry Bonds should only get in if the numbers warrant it, or if he's the best player on a team that doesn't have an all-star selected by the fans.

I agree that season should be the way you vote. As a Cub fan, I don't agree with people who vote for their whole team. Seriously why would I vote for Matt Murton...he's in AAA. Caesar Izturis & Jacque Jones? They've not done much of anything. I vote for Pujols because him and Fielder are a push this season, but Pujols has had the better career...since they are so close this season, I think you vote based on the last couple seasons. But voting for guys like Griffey and Bonds just because they have had such glorious careers don't make sense.
Outfielders i'd vote for because they are having a better season than Bonds and Griffey: Carlos Beltran, Matt Holiday, Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee....no there's not a bunch but there are enough that are better.
Pujols and Fielder I say are close....Albert's final nmber will be better. Vote for whoever you want to vote for....I know who I'm voting for and thats Pujols, Soriano, Beltran, and Holiday.

i shouldnt even have answered this question, because the correct answer is the season stats. and many above me have the answer. But, i had to add my two cents to some of the above comments..........pujols and fielder have push seasons thus far???......lol are you kidding pujols is way sub par to his usual and not even in top 5 first baseman by numbers this year. Fielder is hands down the best choice based off this years stats. For the guy that said voting griffey or bonds was wrong???...........Who else are you going to vot for?? Leading vote getter is beltran with a 278 average 9 homers 36 rbi 36 runs scored and 9 steals........Bonds is 281 with 30 36 and 4. Griffey also has similar numbers. How is beltran 400 000 votes ahead of those guys?? Because he is from ny that is why. Same with the other guy in the running for starting outfielders which is soriano. He has better numbers than beltran, but just snuck into 3rd in front of bonds. You have other outfielders in byrnes with his outfield assitst and batting avg., duncan with similar numbers, many many others. There is no clear cut top one or two or three in starting outfielders for the n.l. this season and if it finished bonds, griffey and beltran or bonds, griffey and soriano for the starting 3 there is no way you could dispute it. Bonds and griffey both deserve consideration based on this seasons numbers!!!!!!

The All-Star games should solely be based on the season. They have something to honor career stats - the Hall of Fame.

Season. If they have a great 20 season career, and you vote for them for theyre career they may have a bad season. Whereas season you have a better idea of how they will do in the All Star Game.

Should be based on season stats. This is the 2007 All-Star Team, not all-time MLB all-star team. This is why Barry Bonds should not be going to the all-star game. While he leads the NL in on-base percentage, he is fourth among NL outfielders in homeruns, sixteenth among outfielders in RBI's and twenty-eighth among outfielders in batting average. Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday, and Xavier Nady should be the starting outfield for the NL, based on their season stats.

its supposed to be by season, but people vote by career. Isn't it funny how players make the all-star game who are having sub par or par seasons. Granted hes a great player, but Jeter is in it ever year regardless of how his season is going. its funny how the analyst's talk bad about the fans who vote for who ever they want regardless of performance, Yet Harold Reynolds was upset last year when Jeter wasn't there. He was like how do you have an all-star game without Derek Jeter (when he was having a average season)? What a hypocrite lol. But everyone does it.

100% the season. It doesn't happen that way, though, the all-star voting is usually a year off. If a player is really good this season he has a good chance of making it next year, even if he isn't as good.
