it seems like we are born so that we pass on our ideas to future generations, nothing else. Therefore the body is only to sustain the mind, which in turn creates ideas that surpass the physical being.

well said, and if I may add, we are born not only to pass on ideas but to affect lives positively. life is not all about eating and drinking or acquiring and possessing. Life is about having and sharing.
As the mind creates ideas that surpass the physical being so also the spiritual being determines the working of the mind hence determining the outcome of the physical.

But if the reason for existance is always predicated on a future we not only will never fully realize, but one also likely doomed either when the the universe finally expends all of its energy in further expansion or collapses back onto itself in another big bang, then existance for the goal of passing on ideas seems to be rather empty indeed. I would argue instead that we exist for the here and now, for it is all that truly exists. The here and now can be made better by the passing on and taking in of ideas, then all the more power for it, but the here and now is both mind and body.
