Every language has its dialects -- forms of a language that are peculiar to specific regions or social groups. That said, some people think they are cool and others just plain lazy.

It's either because they think it's cool or because they're just too lazy to write the whole word out, so any form of shortening it is welcome.Or maybe because they're so used to using the word online they just use it and don't really think about it. Like, for instance, I say things like ttyl and l8r all the time on im and I don't really think about it.

It is shorter to say that instead, and it is also popularized via the media and today's stars. Lots of that kind of "slang" is used in rap songs and Ebonics.

Some people, like the French, don't have that sound ("th") in their language, so they have a hard time pronouncing it. Others grow up hearing "dis" and "dat," so that's how they pronounce it, even when they're corrected.
My pet peeve is "ax" instead of "ask," but I guess the "sk" sound is difficult for some people to pronounce.
For myself, I'd love to be able to roll my "r"s, and I've tried, but no luck yet.

I think it shorthand for morons. It is really annoying when people type how they talk, or for that matter, talk how they type (like saying lol, brb, etc. in a converstion).

It's called style, I suspect.
Before one breaks the rules of grammar (by introducing slang or style), one must be aware of the rule(s) violated; otherwise, how will you know what's correct or what's common or what's just plain, ol' stoopid?!

That really bothers me as well. How hard is it to press one more letter on the keyboard?
