We are creatures of habit, we are drown to things we can not have/should not do because of the excitement heightened by the forbidden.

There's a chance that driving to work is catastrophic, if I get into an accident. We keep doing it because the risk is low, and the benefits are high. As the risk gets higher, the benefits may get higher, too. It's a personal decision as to whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks. Catastrophe may be possible, but if there is also a chance for success, then we may choose to continue the behavior.

Are you talking about love?
If so, we keep doing it because we must. Because love, while it can be catastrophic is the most beautiful experience there is.
If you're talking about self-destructive behaviours, people do it because on some level they don't like themselves & don't feel that they deserve to be happy. Or they're thrill-seekers who thrive on danger. Or they're just silly or careless...

Basically, because we are human beings and believe that given a little time, we can solve or change, most situations.
This probably sounds, "Big headed", but if you look back through history, we have managed to do it, on most occasions.
