Are you talking about seedlings that are only 3'' tall? If that is the case you may be over watering them. When a plant turns yellow that is an indication of being over watered. However, just in case you are talking about a fully grown vine with 3" cucumbers then they probably have a disease called "Bacterial Wilt" caused by the cucumber beetle. You can tell if this is correct by breaking off a piece of cucumber vine and touching your finger to the broken end. If you pull back you finger and it is sticky and stringy then it is bacterial wilt. This is the main cause of dying cucumbers. The insect is tiny with two yellow strips (sometimes one stripe) down the length of it's back.

Darren,

Are the cucumbers fruiting and shriveling up or the plant themselves?

There are a few possibilities- poor soil, not enough light, not enough or too much water, and insects. To find out which it is you will have to experiment a little. Try more or less water. Add mature compost to your soil. pull up one plant by the roots and check for larvae or insects.

A great way to find out is to call your local Master Gardener organization. These groups often have gardening hot-lines to call or centers to bring in plants to show to a real person. Search online for master gardener group in your area.

make sure they are planted in the right light, good soil, and give them enough water. maybe a fertilizer would work too.
