BDSM is a short hand way of describing a sexual preference for violence domination and humiliation in sex.

The letters are used to describe several different paraphilias which come under the 'umbrella' of BDSM

The Letters stand for Bondage, Domination, Sadism and Masochism.

Within this the letters within BDSM can be cut down to describe differing tendencies by those who are in the lifestyle.

For example an S&M relationship will describe those who are particularly drawn to the violent aspect, whilst a d/s (in this case meaning dominant submissive and only ever written as D/s) is concerned with the domination of one person by another, and can even be descibed as a master/slave relationship (M/s)

The capitalisation of letters may seem inocuous to you but within sadism this is very important, and a submissive or slave would simply not countenence spelling their abusers name without capitlising it in the same way a Buddist would not spin a prayer wheel or a Muslim would not try to attend Mecca. Of course an abuser would never ever capitilise their submissive or slaves name. It is taken incredibly seriously within sadism and is ment to convey the writters 'submission' to thier so called 'master' or 'dominant'.

Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism.

These things are lumped together in an effort to describe people who enjoy a "kinky" lifestyle. BDSM can be anything from erotic spanking and domestic discipline, to the infliction of pain and scarring in an effort to heighten feelings of arousal.
