On a leak test with free & paid for firewalls This one came 1st & its free:

http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Zonealarm free firewall came 3rd.

Windows firewall scored very poorly.

In regards to Joby G answer - windows defender is an anti spyware program & a very poor one - its still a beta program, its detection rate is only 48%.

comodo is free, and an excellent firewall. The only thing you might find "annoying" is its "training" period. It gets used to YOUR internet habits, during which time (usually brief, but it tapers off gradually, and surely continues to some small degree forever) you're asked to authorize (or not) certain internet activities. For example, if you have Google Desktop installed, Google Desktop may seek to update its news gadget via the internet connection. comodo will notice this, and ask, Is this okay? Should I remember your response? You respond, Yep, it's okay, and remember my response. You'll never be asked again. But then, the same day, you may be asked, J.P.Doppleganger is trying to fetch your street address via internet connection. Do you want to allow this? You might want to reply NO! Handy alert, que no? Plus, behind the scenes, comodo is ALREADY intercepting all manner of other already-known harmful gunk...worth a try, and industry recognized!
