You may be aware of some chaos brewing around you, but not have the knowledge of what is acutally causing the chaos, how long it will last or how to stop it.

Awareness is the awakening which allows knowledge to be acquired, it is the beginning of the process which leads to wisdom and culminates in insight.. Knowledge is more specific, being composed of data, facts which are accumulated. Awareness is more general, being an attitude and approach to the world. [The question begets the answer.]
From there the process becomes again more general in wisdom gained by the skillful application of that knowledge over time before once again becoming specific in insight which breaks through revealing new and greater questions and applications of specific knowledge for a particular problem at hand.

Each is in a sense independent, however, there are many who have knowledge and wisdom without ever acquiring insight.

[Intuitive and transcendental knowledge are on yet another plane, through a door unlocked by the key of insight and guided by the light of wisdom. One must take to each level the treasure acquired in the previous chamber of consciousness. Intuition is knowing of oneself that which is to be known (the noemata) transcendence is having a global or cosmic sense of that knowledge (gnosis or noemon).]

To give an answer that is brief and to the point regarding my personal opinion, I would use an example. Imagine you are in a thick forest in the middle of a pitch black night. And to see your way through you have a powerful torch. Now this torch represents your source of knowledge in that forest. Its beam is focused, but you can see only in one direction at a time. But the awareness in this case is your realisation of fact that you are in a place where there is more things in places than you can see with the light of your torch. Within that awareness of the place you are in you then will use your torch to ensure your safety and a safest passage through.

If knowledge is like a focused beam of light then our awareness is like the light of a candle. This is the fact about our mind. Human mind is capable is non-linear acquisition of the things, or facts, about of environment and even the entire universe at large. We are in exceptional situations capable of intuitive and transcendental knowledge. The fact the we are tuned to seeing things like a light of torch is due to the logical arrangement of our three dimensional physical world, and this is the very reason we do not see our world the way a candle, for instance, would.

Instead of knowledge if then we try mediation or contemplation of humanly encompassing emotions like love and compassion, we would see more, may be same things but with various enhanced or hightened concerns and interests in our mind.

Awareness is knowing that something can be acted upon to achieve an outcome. Knowledge is the ability to achieve the act, obtaining an outcome. Most people know that brain surgery can save or prolong life(awareness). Few people know how to successfully achieve brain surgery(knowledge) saving peoples lives.

the spellings....lol...Awareness is more specific. Because you can know anything, but if you are not aware of it at that moment, you will not use it. Just like I know the square root of 4, but maybe the math question was confusing and I was not aware of the meaning of the question.

This is quite a tricky one.
It is possible to be aware of a problem, but not have sufficient knowledge to deal with it.
Thus you have awareness, but not knowledge, in this case.

We cannot "know" anything for certain while controlled by our beliefs about the world (mostly hidden and learned) which make us misperceive the facts.

Gaining "awareness" of these misperceptions and their origins, allows us to gain self-knowledge and actually be capable of "knowing" anything for certain.
