Use your VIN number, go to www.realoem.com, once you key in your VIN, it should already list (highlighted in blue) your engine type. This website is also fantastic for you to look at parts, part numbers and estimated prices.

The key difference between the two engines I believe is:
The M40 uses a timing BELT. The M43 uses a timing chain. There's also a slight difference in torque figures (6lb-ft).

Another way to find out is simply calling the dealer and giving them your VIN number.

It's an M40, I have a book that lists all the engine codes and I see nothing about an M43.

M43 Engine

it is an m40 because they only replaced it in 1995 and another way to tell is to look at the engine and if it square and has BMW printed on a black strip. if it is an m43 it wont have a black strip saying BMW it will just have BMW stamped into the head.i know because i had an 316i 1997 and it tells you in Haynes manual. good luck
