Man, I live in the suburbs, but had to go in town today, and I can't believe the amount of homeless people I am seeing, pushing grocery carts w/ all of their stuff in it, and sleeping on benches or in door ways. I admit it's been a while since I've been in there, but OMG, why isn't someone helping these people? If I could I would, but what can I do? I help out w/ Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner at our local shelters but that's for like abused woman and children, I feel so bad for these people.

There are some in my city, but I too am in the suburbs. Most are in the "downtown" area of Cleveland. Yes, it's disturbing. I try to do what I can, in giving blankets, etc, but the numbers in our country are overwhelming. America and Americans should come first with our politicians; we literally have people starving to death in what is supposed to be the richest country in the world. Wake up folks - lets start putting ourselves first for a change! (Sorry for the tirade)

Yes, I help the Christian Rescue Mission here in Houston.
Most of what I personally do is to do with helping the elderly needy. The ones that planned for their future but the money just doesn't go far enough now. We help with utilities and other needs in order to keep them in their own homes as long as possible.

Our organization also helps the Houston homeless. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas we have a big feed at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Last year we fed 70,000 homeless people at those 2 dinners combined.
The problem is going to get far worse in the future.

Too many. And I mean that as in it's too many people who aren't using the shelters and getting back on their feet. Once a week there's a story in the paper about another homeless person dying. This is a relatively small city, but there are resources. One quote from the paper said that they liked their lifestyle, straight from the homeless person's mouth. They're not a threat or anything, but I feel bad that they say themselves that they don't want help.

I have no idea what I could do either. It's sad.

Not all of these people want help...some are convicts hiding, many are people that were let out of the mental health systems and have either have no family they want anything to do with or the family doesn't want them...

In San Antonio a church set up a food kitchen downtown for the 30 to 40 street bums and now there are hundreds that show up every day...it got so bad the police had to start removing them because they panhandle at the riverwalk and the city doesn't want them their bothering the tourists...

In Austin the city set up a homeless shelter and now there are twice as many homeless people hanging out around the city looking for handouts...

Be careful what you ask for...more will show up...

yeah i have them in my city as well. it is such a shame. i hardly ever have a reason to go downtown but when i do, at almost every street corner, one of them comes up and asks me for change or a cigarette or something of that nature. i do give them the spare chane i have which usually is about 2 dollars. it is not much but it is something. there are people who are just too lazy to work or do anything (i know because i have some of them in my family) and that is the reason why they are homeless but the ones i really feel sorry for are the ones who have tried to do right but have gotten screwed every why they could by the state, government etc.... and therefore they cannot pay to live decently. some people just dont have the heart to help people. that is a sad thing. all we can do is to do the best we can when we can to help those people. one person can make a difference. good luck.

I live in a small town so we don't have very many... we have some great people here that try to make sure everybody has a place to stay and the basic necessities. I went to a large city about an hour away and saw people as you described. It's heartbreaking. I wish I was rich so i could do something to help...

When I lived on Long Island they were every where. I recently relocated to Tennessee out of the city limits and I don't see any. The city of Clarksville offers many programs to help prevent homelessness and it seems to be working.

Im sure a lot of people would if they could but they cant. And the governments not gonna do anything about it. They'll spend $400 for a hammer but they wont spend $20 to feed someone for a day.
