The posters who said you have a choice are correct. You do need to stick with the same method for the entire cycle, and also...make sure to sanitize the thermometer if you decide to change methods. Also, if you were to change, you are best to stay with one method for longer than one cycle because of the ability to see longer patterns or trends in multiple cycles.
Also, generally, you do need to take your temp before you get up and do anything, I have found that if your routine everymorning is to get up and go to the bathroom, then temping while doing that is ok. Basically, the first thing I do is go to the bathroom and take my temp at the same time....since my pattern stays the same, there is relatively no affect on my daily temperatures because the disturbance for that bit of motion is there in every temp.

You can take it either way, some things I've read said to try taking it orally and if your not getting any sort of pattern then try it vaginally. Vaginally is also suppose to be more accurate. I take take mine in the mouth under my tongue (look up online or in the package of your thermometer, there are suppose to be different areas under the tongue, one of which is most accurate) and haven't had problems. If you breathe through your mouth at night though then the other way may be better.
Don't switch back and forth in one month between where you take your temp, the temps won't be exactly the same so the chart for that month wouldn't really be helpful.
Make sure you are using a basal thermometer and not a fever one too.

You do need to use a special type of thermometer, which is able to record the slight changes in your temperature. You should be able to find these Basal thermometers in your local pharmacy.
It is best if you take your BBT orally close to the same time every morning, and it has to be immediately after you wake. Make sure you have had at least three hours of uninterrupted sleep before you take your BBT.

I have heard of women taking their temp vaginally, but I took mine orally. Just try to take it the same time every morning, but make sure it's before you even sit up. I kept my thermometer right next to my alarm clock, so I would grab it and take my temp first thing. If you want to learn more about bbt and chart your temps for free, check out fertilityfriend.com. I charted both my pregnancies on line. It's a wonderful web-site.

For BBT purposes your temp can be taken orally, vaginally, or rectally. But whichever method you chose you need to stick with for the entire cycle. I personally find orally to be the most convenient, but for some women who sleep with their mouths open and get irratic temps, vaginally or rectally is better. It is simply a matter of personal choice.

You can take it either way, its your choice. Taking your temp by mouth is a little eaiser but if you sleep with your mouth open it is recomended that you take it vaginally because you will not get an accurate reading by mouth.

The best place is in your mouth, as soon as you awake after 3 consecutive hours of sleeping and before getting out of bed.

don't listen to those who say it is either way, it is by mouth only. do it before you even get out of bed, have the thermometer right by the bed.
