I just wanted to know for sure so I can protect the family if I need to. I hear they can outrun humans. That's a scary thought. I guess you have to keep your distance from woods and wear eyes on the back of your head. Would mace keep 'em off you?

No it would be almost impossible by yourself no matter how big you are.Of course the size of the animal matters as well if it was a juvenile alligator maybe you could easily wrestle it to the ground that is if it doesn't bite you first..
Alligators or crocodiles don't usually attack people out of the water and although they can easily outrun you , if they attacked you , you might already be dead
Let me explain;
Crocodiles and alligators are more of an ambush predator meaning that they will strike when you least expect it. Even though that is true they will only attack you when you're near the water's edge. Most likely they will grab hold of you and drag you to the water. If you would somehow manage to ecape their hold or dodge it you wouldn't need to worry about it coming after you on land. For the alligators or crocodiles chasing after you on land would require too much energy and they wouldn't want to be exhausted.
If you really want to be care ful then I would advice to stay clear of the water's edge or risk being attacked.
Alligators can attack you on land if they are sunbathing and you disturb them but no idiot would do that. If that would happen it would most likely turn around quickly and warn you first then attack(or just attack). If a crocodile were to strike you with its tail it could break one of your legs

In any case be careful if you happen to come across one of these creatures the best thing would be to avoid them but if worse comes to worse then I recommend getting a shotgun(worst case scenario)but don't worry about it too much the chances of one attacking you are pretty much slim to none worry the most about the earth's most dangerous creature (the mosquito)especially if you live in Florida

Hope this answered your questions

I just moved from Florida after 10 years of living there. First in 10 years I saw a dramatic decline in the alligator population in the Tampa area.. Second if its an angry momma trying to protect her nest then no you will not be able to wrestle her she will win. Most of the time they just want to be left alone..There are signs all over that you will see.. do not feed or molest the alligators (aka don't bother them why they chose molest I don't know maybe that was for the rednecks). I cannot imagine that mace would do anything, but I am sure you can contact the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife and they will give you tips..If you are on the water and you start to feed them, that is usually where the problems begin, with the areas growing so rapidly they are losing their natural habitat and are turning to humans and our pets for food.. I lived near Lake Tarpon, and when I first moved there and took my dog for a walk a gator would usually follow us (me on land him in water). Now nothing, I moved less than two months ago and I had not seen a gator in probably 6 months. Good Luck and just use common sense you'll be fine.

You need to read up on alligators. Half of what you say here is not even true. Only a very small handful of people get attacked my alligators, and 95% of them were swimming in water they were not supposed to be swimming in. The other 5% were probably trying to save their dumb dog that got too close. Yes, they can outrun you... for about five feet. If you're on the land, though, the odds of one catching you is pretty slim if you don't fall down. Truth is that most of them wouldn't bother anyway. They'll leave you alone if you leave them alone. All that said, you COULD wrestle one if attacked, but whether or not you won would depend on how big the alligator was. They can be as small as a few inches and as big as 16 feet. Considering that the odds of you ever having to are next to nil, I wouldn't worry about it.

Fairly quickly for short periods. Up to 25-30 mph. However, an alligator is what is known as an ambush predator that relies on stealth rather than speed to obtain prey. So Elysund you might find it a little to late after you decided to break the land speed record for humans (lol). Fortunately, attacks on humans by alligators are exceedingly rare. Your chances are far better of being struck by lightening than being attacked by an alligator.

I don't know if you could wrestle one. It depends on how good a wrestler you are. However, it's very improbable if you don't know what you're doing.

If you do happen to try, remember this:
An alligator can break a steel bar that is wedged into its mouth (to keep it open). However, an average woman can hold its mouth shut.

So just don't let it get its mouth open.

Also, remember that alligators kill by dragging their prey underwater and drowning them. So if you are wrestling an alligator, DO NOT get near the water. It will beat you.

Just remember the gators main attack is going to be straight ahead because of its jaws. It's not going to let you get any where else so good luck and remember the tail is powerful too so the best thing to do is run away or attack the eyes if it has something in it's jaws, hopefully not you.

Your best bet is to leave the alligators alone. If you do find yourself in a dangerous situation with one, your best bet is to find something to climb. They can run pretty fast, but they're inept at climbing. The mace might be worth trying as a last resort, but I wouldn't count on it. Just leave them alone and you should be fine.

OK you Steve Irwin Right? well he was a pretty small guy but6he also needs more than four people to tackle down a crocodile and most of these guys are HUGE. now if you know to tackle an Alligator correctly maybe but don't count on it.

alligators are pretty docile creatures, they won't mess w/ you unless you mess w/ them or feed them; b/c your not a natural food source for them. The only place you will mostly see them is in the swamps.
