To the other writers ( except for the one who wrote the Rainbow Bridge poem) : come on guys, knock off the "life is tough and then you die" sh*t. " This asker is in pain, and doesn't deserve to be treated this way. If it was you, would you want her to treat YOU that way? To the asker- I'm sorry you have lost your pet. Thinking of him at the Rainbow Bridge might give you some comfort. What happened was not your fault, and I'm not sure that you could have prevented this even if you had been there. I know only too well what it is like to find an animal I love lying dead- I have had that experience many times with both horses and dogs, and it NEVER gets any easier. Give yourself time, and be gentle with yourself. Let yourself cry and feel the pain- there is NO shame in tears, no matter what anyone says about it not being a grown up thing to do. In time, the pain will ease off some. Try to think of the good times, like when you first had your pet. Make sure that you get enough sleep, and that you take some time to exercise and get out of the house for a while each day. Grief is hard work, and you need to take care of yourself so that you can get through it. Good luck, and again, I'm sorry you lost your pet.

I am so sorry! I hope this helps.
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It's ok, don't blame yourself, that will just make it worse. Think of it as it was his time. We all have to go sometime. Don't think that pets aren't included in that. But sometimes we just have to move on. I know it was only just today, but try thinking of good things that happened today. Enjoy the life you have know. Don't get stressed out about it. When my cat died I was a mess! But then I got over it because I realized that one tragedy doesn't stop life. You have to keep moving forward. Life won't stop it will keep passing. And you'll end up missing it. Try realizing what a great life he had and see that no one lives forever. My deepest condolences. Hope you can realize what to do next. Contact me if you need more words of kindness. :-D

They don't really live all that long and you sound like a caring person so you did all the right things, food, water, clean cage, right temps, etc. right? We have no control beyond that none of us do. It was his time so bury him and have a little ceremony and write a little poem about how you loved him and in a few weeks the hurt will be a lot less. Are you able to adopt another from an animal shelter?

I'm so sorry about your piggie! I recently lost one of mine to pneumonia (he was sick when I adopted him and I didn't know it). I hope you feel better. Don't blame yourself for it, it happens.
Besides, he's up in heaven munching on grass with other pigs. He'll have a grand old time. ;)

It's not your fault. I had 2 guinea pigs. One was mine (Princess) and one was my BF (I forget it's name :-( ). We went out for a weekend, came back, and my BF's GP was dead. We even had ppl feeding him and watching him while we were gone and he still went away. We still don't know why. Princess went on to live for like 2 years. So, don't blame yourself.

i know it is very hard to lose a pet and we do tend to blame ourselves, but its usually not our fault. i had a Chinchilla put to sleep after 10 years, it was very hard to have him put to sleep. but just keep your memories of your special pet close to your heart and he will always be with you.
