I had an internal at 6 weeks to find the heartbeat because it was too early to detect it with the doppler.

I depends on the reasoning behind the ultrasound. I am now 18 weeks pregnant and they did an internal ultrasound at 6 weeks, that is when the heartbeat can be detected, any sooner then that, odds are nothing will really show up. After that anytime in your pregnancy an inernal or external ultrasound can be performed, however you will have to wait until about 17-22 weeks to find out the sex of the baby from an external.

With my youngest, I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 4 weeks along. The egg sac hadn't developed yet, so it was pretty useless. Another one at 6 weeks showed the developing egg sac and the heartbeat.

I had an external ultrasound at 10 weeks and it showed the developing baby. Prior to that it's not usually done because nothing is really visible to the external scan. The internal one is much more sensitive in the first trimester.

I had my first internal sonogram at 9 weeks. I looked up some info. & found this:

According to: http://www.everettclinic.com/kbase/dp/topic/aa22092/dp.htm
"A fetal ultrasound can be done as early as the fifth week of pregnancy. During the test, a small handheld instrument called a transducer is used to direct sound waves toward the body. A computer analyzes the sound waves that are reflected back from structures inside the body and converts them into an image. Fetal ultrasound can be done by moving the transducer across the woman's abdomen (transabdominal) or by putting the transducer in her vagina (transvaginal). After about the 11th week of pregnancy, almost all ultrasound tests are done using the transabdominal method."

I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks when I went in for my first appointment. That was to make sure I was pregnant and that the baby's heart was beating.

Then, I didn't have another ultrasound utnil 16 weeks.

Most doctors usually wait until your second trimester, but you can get a scan earlier than that if it indicates so.
