I have a two year old girl, but in my experience girls and boys like alot of similar things so...

a tricycle or other ride on toy
Anything Diego (nick Jr) - figures, toys, balls , pajamas - no kidding they love pajamas with characters- big boy underwear with characters are good too!
Backyardigans, Thomas the Train, Bob the Builder, elmo, and Disney's Cars are other good character choices
Sports stuff - little basketball hoop, soccer set with goal - stuff like that
Trucks - especially construction type stuff like dump trucks and bulldozers
Bath time stuff - crayons, finger paints, and tub toys are great
Beach stufff - sandcastle things, sunglasses, bathing suit, towels (characters of course!)

2year olds are very active, so a push or pull toy is good. Toys R Us can give you ideas. Fisher-Price makes loads of great toys.

any toy from any movie he watches or series,

dora the explorer
spongebob
thomas the engine

ask the mom what are his favorite tv characters or movie's and pick from there. nothing little, he will lose it or swallow it.

anything rideable, not too much maintenance, not having to have adult around for it, things like that.
