Alchemy was driven by the belief that all substances, when properly treated, could be converted to gold.

The process was nonscientific guesswork. I am sure there were numerous frauds both intentionally and accidentaly.

Chemistry is not obsessed with turning things to gold. The purpose is to understand why reactions occur, how to drive desirable and inhibit undesirable reactions. It uses the scientific method in approach.

Alchemy is not a true science. It tries to change elements into other elements (ultimately gold) without nuclear reactions - which is impossible.
