Most likely it is the result of trial and error. When early man first started to live in loosely defined groups there, obviously, were no rules. As time went by tribes developed and had different rules. Eventually, it became determined by most groups, as they became more and more civilized and socialized what combination worked best for society.

Most arrived at the one man one woman monogamous model. Which makes sense. One man bound to one woman and all the offspring a result of the union of the two, gave the man an important stake in the relationship. He measured his own value by how well he provided for his wife and children.

To promote this model of behavior it was given a special status. It is the standard that the group holds above all others. Those in authority would come to bless this union in public ceremonies to promote this as the standard others should also strive for.

For thousands of years it has been the main building block of orderly societies. There are other combinations that may work but only one can be the approved standard. Only this one model is considered the best for society in general, gets the blessing of society and the title: Marriage.
