I've heard that a lot as well but I personally would not do it.

as a general rule, women shouldn't drink alcohol while they're pregnant. The birth defects resulting from fetal alcohol syndrome are too high a price to pay. Furthermore, since we don't know exactly how much alcohol triggers these defects, it's best to err on the side of caution and just not drink at all.
Worldwide, alcohol is probably the greatest single cause of birth defects. The main features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are poor growth, abnormal facial features, and cognitive impairment ranging from problems of learning and attention, to more severe mental retardation. Many children who do not have the full FAS picture may have a milder form, with learning problems but not the physical signs.
Not all women who drink heavily during pregnancy give birth to children with FAS. Certain ethnic groups are biologically more susceptible to the problem. For most women, it's probable that a small amount of alcohol won't cause major ill effects. On the other hand, no safe level has been defined, so the most cautious decision is to avoid alcohol altogether. This is especially true during the first three months of pregnancy, when the fetus' vulnerability to alcohol effects may be greatest.

I can answer this one. I am pregnant too, but my doctor says why take the chance.... Some doctors suggest (usually older doctors cause they are old school), that later in the pregnancy a glass of wine can help you relax if stressed, but why would you want to take that chance if you can do without it? As a special education teacher, I have kids with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and trust me, these kids have little to no retention skills. We are unsure of how much alcohol it actually takes to harm the baby. Remember that once upon a time, Doctors told people to smoke too because it actually was a stress reliever.. now we know that it slowly kills us... so just pass up that glass of wine just in case. When we have friends over I drink non-alcoholic wine or fruit juice and put it in a pretty glass with an umbrella! :)

There is controversy around this. Some doctors say an occasional glass of red wine is ok. In fact after my sister had her amnio her ob told her to go home put her feet up and have a small glass of wine. There is evidence on both sides of whether drinking is ok or not. I have had 1 sip of beer and 2 sips of red wine since getting pregnant and by sips I mean sips. There is a risk if you decide to drink more than a sip here or there. It is a personal decision you will have to make on your own. However I would talk with doctor before drinking any.

I've heard it, but I, personally, wouldn't risk it.
I knew a woman who was told by her OBGYN (in another country) to drink a glass or two of wine each week of her pregnancy. Unfortunately, her son was born with obvious signs of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome- he was borderline Down's Syndrome.
To each his own, but, knowing that I am the sole provider for a child, and that what I choose to put into my body is directly ingested into my child's blood stream, I wouldn't risk it- there are so many other ways a child can have difficulties in life, that I would choose to make it the most hospitable environment for a fetus- including drinking milk, something I loathe!
or, maybe, that's just me...

That FDA and most doctors will encourage you to NOT drink ANY amount of alcohol when pregnant. However, research has not been able to prove or disprove that a small amount of wine is harmful to the baby.
Personally, i didnt have any alcohol. I nurse now, and will on occasion after my son is asleep, have A GLASS of wine. But when I was pregnant I just couldnt imagine it.

When I was clotting and bleeding my mom told me to drink one glass of wine. She told me the clots and blood will pass faster. I thought I was loosing my baby. So I drink a glass, of wine the next day I pass large clots and blood at once. Went to the doctors they said the baby is still in there. If the clots were not gone so fast it could have weighed to much on the sac and cost a miscarriage.

My doc actually told me the day before I was supposed to deliver to have 1 glass of wine that evening to calm my nerves for my c-section the next day. He said it would not harm the baby and it would relax me. I didn't feel comfortable drinking while I was pregnant so I just took a warm bath instead.

i cant say a glass of wine once or twice a week in harmful to the baby, unless you are in your first 3 months, then it may be different. my sister who drank alot, and drank hard liquor in her first 3 months + gave birth to my nephew who has fas. but it is mild...not that that makes it OK...just pointing out it is mild. I also drank with my first pregnancy, before i found out i was pregnant. but i was 4 months along before i found out. my son has no problems at all, hes a really smart kid, and has no signs of fas. however my drinking was not everyday, just sometimes. so anyway, based on experience, i dont think the a drink here and there will harm your baby as long as its done in moderation.....my mom also told me that when she was pregnant with me she had alot of "false labor" and her Dr told her to drink a glass of red wine if she was having contraction and if it was false labor then the wine would stop it and if it was real labor then her contractions would continue. she said when she tried drink a glass it stopped the contractions like the Dr said, and when it was "time" she also drank a glass of wine and she continued to have contractions, and then out i came. anyway, if you trust your Dr's advice then by all means follow it. if you have doubt, then dont. good luck to you and your baby

I've never heard that it was good for you while you were pregnant, but I have heard a OB say that one glass a week is okay and will not do much harm to the fetus. Zero alcohol is even better.

OMG, what hoprrible answers have you gotten. A glass of wine won't hurt the baby, but a couple of times a week is pushing it too far. A glass of wine sporadicly (sp) won't hurt, I was told this by obgyn, I did it during my pg (my bday, on christmas eve, on new years eve) and I was fine as my baby was and still is. Just don't do it during the 1st trimester, it's the most critical one. Good lcuk
