If it is a VGS port, it is usually blue in color with three rows of "holes". The other common is a DVI port, which is a white rectangle with three rows of square "holes".

It is the only socket that is the right shape for the monitor plug.
If it is VGA then it is usually blue with holes for 15 pins in 2 rows. If it is DVI it is usually white, and has a very distinctive layout. See the first and third entries on this page:

it is the plug that has 3 rows of pinholes in it with a blue background for the vga type. If it is dvi, it has a white background and will only accept one type of connector.
