No, it just adds excitement to the game.
Baseball is about how well you know your opponent and if you can out smart them. It's about getting good scouting reports on how to pitch to certain players in various situations.
It's about walking the bases loaded with one out to get to a hitter that will ground into a double play to get you out of an inning
Baseball is a strategic chess match.

Real baseball fans don't think the game is all about home runs. Real fans think strategy and understand the game. Home runs are pretty and exciting but they're not everything. I'm thinking the Ragers and Reds have led the AL and NL in home runs the last couple seasons, and it's been a while since either has been in the playofffs....home runs are only a small part of the game..
Oh guy above me...just last night i sat through an entire nine inning 3-2 Cubs win...pitching duel....like you said though I would much rather watch good pitching that blowout hitting, i agree.

In 2001, the Seattle Mariners tied the all time record for wins in a single season (116) without a power hitter. Yes they had some guys who could hit them out but they didn't have anyone with 40+,
they did this by doing everything else besides hitting home runs. The home runs help when the come, but they won games by grinding them out, they got on base, advanced runners and squeeked out runs one at a time, They had solid pitching and defense to back it up.
Nevermind what happend in the playoffs that year, it was still a great display of how "Little Ball" can still win games.

The home run is all about instant gratification. That's why we like them so much. It's not as exciting as watching a runner stretch a double into a triple, but it happens more often. To me, the most exciting thing in baseball is the possible no hitter or perfect game, but they are few and far between, and it takes a while before you start to realize that it's a possibility.

I think that baseball is one of the only sports were the defense has control over the ball to start the action.
Pitching is what is all about.
Home runs are fun but I love 1-0 scores.

Right now, its all about the homeruns. There are a lot of players that hit 30 a year now, they used to be far between. Homeruns have also had a dramatic impact on base stealing- managers dont like for their guys to steal bases anymore, since the next guy batting hits 20 or 30 homers a year, so they dont want to risk the baserunner. Homeruns being hit the way that they are has devalued a lot of the strategy that used to exist.

>Home Runs get new fans
>Strategy and everything else involved with baseball keeps existing fans
Check out the link for the progression of the single season HR leaders (towards the bottom). Even though the earlier seasons had fewer games, they still didn't hit many HRs.

For better or worse, baseball is a lot more about home runs than it is bunting or moving runners over via ground balls. I'd say that it's currently a combination of getting on base and having power guys drive them home. Speed and "smallball" have definitely taken a back seat in today's game.
Along with the power game, the other critical component is pitching. You can score a lot of runs, but bad pitching will always hold you back.

baseball today is a hitters game
the baseball is lighter. newer technology is allowing light bats with maximum pop to make the ball go farther
i play everything in baseball, but i love pitching more. i wish it was more of a pitchers game today, but its really not
the feeling of strategically working a batter and finally getting him out is much more rewarding than getting a hit off of a pitcher

It is all about home runs. Small parks, steroids, bad pitching, too many teams all lead to home runs. That's why I hate MLB right now. I would much rather see a 1-0 pitcher's duel than a 15 -11 slugfest at Coors Field. MLB, in my opinion, is a joke, and that's why I don't watch it anymore. When was the last time you sat through an entire nine innings? Boooorrrriiiinnngggg!!.
