Why would you say a book is good? When do you like to read a book and what motivates you to turn the pages?

For me, its about strong character development. You want characters that you understand, doing interesting things. I think that is why authors like Stephen King are so popular- he may not wirte the greatest literature ever created, but he creates rather deep, crazy characters going through interesting situations.

The book has to grab my attention and not let it go. Usually, I'll have it with me wherever I go. To me, I need to care about the characters & what happens to them and the plot has to be exciting that is what makes a good book. I really don't care which genre it is; it can be: a triller, mystery, horror, sci-fi, action/adventure, or even a nonfiction book. The book just has to grab attention and won't let it go.

I usually will read a book when I'm here alone at my house and after all the housework is done. Sometimes, I ride around with my husband and when I do that, I will always have a book in my hands to read then, also.

What really motivates anybody when they are reading a book to keep on turning the pages to find out what happens to all the characters in the book is this...plot and how the reader cares about the characters and wants them to either have a good ending or bad one. It depends how the reader feels about each character in the book. :)

I think a book is good when I'm reading but totally forget that I"m reading. When I don't notice that I'm turning pages. When the words create scenes so well that I feel like I'm watching everything that's happening. When the story ends and I realize that for the past 8 hours I haven't moved or eaten or noticed anything else around me. When even after I close the book, my minds still goes back thinking over different points and I want to read other books in the same genre or by the same author. I think what type of book that is depends on the reader, but I think a good book makes you want to reread it, makes you think, and takes you entirely into the world within it.

A good book is a page turner that makes me think. It could be about anything, but a book that is remarkable, rememberable, and fantastic must motivate the person reading it to action. You must love it, or hate it enough to want to chuck it across the room. My favorite books are the ones that keep me up at night, locked in my room, with just my reading light on, and I don't want to put them down.

It's all about anticipation for what could come next, that's what keeps me turning the pages ... however ... having said that, a book has to be well written, that means, in my mind, that it must have clear and well-rounded characters (well described, with both positive and negative characteristics and internal conflicts) a great setting that has facts that match the time-period, there is a clear conflict and the conflict has multiple sub-conflicts (it's not just one thing, life never has one conflict, there are always multiples) and a resolution that isn't all that obvious, but is believable. Humor, creativity and romance help.

When i think of a good book i think of a book thats keeps me into the story and makes me want to read more and not just reading that 1 book.

1. Must be challenging in both form and content (no Harry Potter, no bestsellers)
2. If experimental, it must guide the reader in how to read the book
3. Characters and style are more important than plot, but a formulaic plot or an unbelievable plot can ruin the book
4. No genre crap
5. Nothing self-indulgent (like A Million Little Pieces) unless it's also self-deprecating (like David Sedaris' stories/memoirs)

A good book is should always be suspenseful in some way. That is the only thing that a good book absolutely HAS to have. Many other characteristics make a good book but suspense is the only one that it has to have.
