More of a sociological question of contrast and compare.

How are they the same? How are they different? What are the social implications of such, meaning positive, negative, and neutral social impacts of both with regards to movements or events focusing on a and celebrating an identity group.

I asked it because another question I posed "Gay Pride" many answerers said they were offended that there was a Gay Pride. In the past I've heard people liken it to White Pride. This is a forum for discussing our views about the similarities or contrasts between the two.

I am not ashamed to have posted this question. I feel rather than decrease, it increases reflection on different perspectives.

well i am not gay, but i would guess that gay pride is about ceasing to be embarrassed about who u are just because u are not socially accepted as the norm - - -

whereas white pride is a term made up by the majority who already have superior numbers and advantages. they use the term to demean others as much as to pound their own chests.

gay ppl dont do that by use of the term.

white pride is associated with violent hate groups such as the Aryan nation, KKK, militia groups, etc....

and white pride is used to distinguish themselves as better, not just proud.

IMHO

They are both similar in the fact that believers take immense pride in the qualifier. One of the major difference is white pride has become almost synonomous with the white power movement which spreads racism, and intolerence, and the belief that caucasians are superior to every other race. While the gay pride movment is about teaching acceptance, and supports equal rights for all. The negative impacts of white pride are injustices caused by bigotry and the formation of hate groups such as the KKK. The negative social aspects of the gay pride movement is the fact that to the uniformed it looks as if members of the LGBT community are pushing their sexuality at people. The white pride movement has not really made any positive contributions to society. The gay pride movement hasa positivly effected society by continuing the fight for civil rights that began after the end of slavery.

The most obvious difference is that White Pride is a movement to reclaim political and social power that has been 'lost' as the diversification of society increased beyond the paradigm of Rich White People as the Ruling Class.
Gay Pride (as well as any other movements to level the social/economic/personal playing field for minorities) is to actually reach for and attain equality and respect for the first time.
There are also huge differences in terms of how these various groups attempt to achieve their goals.
I've never been afraid of Gay or Lesbian people threatening to shoot me because I am not a blue eyed blonde :)
Nor have I seen a member of the KKK in a Merry Widow.
Good luck

How are they different? Well, they're only _entirely_ different. You should not be bothered in the least that others are offended by the idea of 'gay pride.' Of course they don't want people different from them to have too much pride in anything, lest their power be threatened.

Homosexuals have historically been oppressed, marginalized, physically punished, ostracized, and generally hated _because_ of being gay, whereas whites have not. Whites have never experienced widespread systematic abuse and punishment based on their skin color. In fact, whites have been the ones _afflicting_ abuse on others with different skin colors and cultures and values.

Such ignorant comments regarding gay pride reflect a wider ignorance of the sociological nature of 'privilege': "the privilege to acknowledge you have unearned privilege but ignore what it means" (http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~rjensen/freelance/whiteprivilege.htm ). People use this privilege to ignore the fact that whites, males, heterosexuals, Christians, the wealthy, the educated, and the non-disabled all have unearned privilege in our American society. This privilege is a result of our history and of entrenched hierarchical systems that cannot be "undone" on the individual level - they are systems that burden and harm us all and that we should all attempt to acknowledge for the sake of awareness and raised consciousness.

Comparing a historically ostracized group to a tremendously privileged one is nothing short of utter irresponsibility and ignorance.

There are many FAR more important things to worry about, than the social implication of pride. There is nothing wrong with having a party or a parade to try to foster acceptance and tolerance. In many cities, pride is becoming something that is attended by more than just the gay community.

I'm a white bisexual transgendered man. I have queer pride. I don't have white pride or male pride. I have never had to struggle as a result of my being white or male, there are no inherent obstacles presented to me as a result of being a member of either of those groups. As a queer person, I am faced with obstacles and opposition, and I am proud to be able to be who I am despite that. I think there's a big difference between the pride of an oppressed group and the pride of an already inherently oppressive group.

I believe that gay pride is different because they are basically saying that they are proud of who they are. They are open minded and don't put heterosexuals or people who are different down to make themselves feel more prideful. The majority of people with "white pride" are bigots and feel the need to put down other people in order to make themselves feel superior. It is great to be proud of your heritage, it doesn't mean that everyone else's is wrong. At least as far as I know there haven't been any hangings in the name of Gay Pride. In my eyes there are not many positives about White Pride, at least not the way it is commonly expressed. Gay Pride can have many positives such as opening peoples minds and helping people feel more secure with who they are.

How are they the same. Whites are not a minority, they are not nor have they ever been discriminated against. Gays are a minority and are VERY hated and discriminated against. Isn't this obvious. Why would we need white pride.. thats like saying we need straight pride. B/c clearly straight people are hated and discriminated against on a daily basis. Come on.

I think pride of any cultural, ethnic or other such group is along pretty much the same lines. Personally, I don't have a problem with white pride, black pride, gay pride...

Celebrate who you are...

The only times problems arise is when your pride causes hatred and violence towards other groups.

gay pride is mean that you are happy about being gay as well it means you are showing the world that you are there, you are not bad... and white pride sounds a little bit racist depending of the context.. but in my opinion I should show I am gay as well I am a human with the same feelings,, not different from others..
