When ever I am feeding my 9 month old son, he continuously grabs for the spoon. He does fine the first half and the second half of the feeding is when grabs at it. I know this is all a learning process, but should I encourage this behavior? He grabs the spoon and empties everything out, he never gets any in his mouth. He just wants to chew on it. He will get so mad when I don't let him have it or try to take it away. I have even tried to let him hold on to a spoon and I feed him with another one. He still wants the one that I am using. I give him plenty of finger foods to eat by himself and he does pretty good with that. So, should I encourage him when he grabs the spoon like that or not?

You need to 'back off' from feeding your son and just let him 'make a total mess' all by himself. He's 'grabbing for the spoon' because he 'knows' that he can 'do it himself' but because you 'insist' on 'feeding him' he hasn't 'learned how to use the spoon' yet by himself. Yes, he may not 'get enough' to eat at first ... but just 'let go' and leave him 'alone' and just 'talk to him' (as if he's an ADULT) and he'll soon 'master' the spoon and be 'so proud' of himself for doing it, and also be 'proud' to have such a 'smart mommy' who 'let him learn by himself.'

Its all about what you want from him. If its easier for you to feed him and then let him try to feed himself when youre done, then of course teach him not to grab it from you.

My 4 month old does the same thing. He gets sooo angry if I dont let him try to feed himself. At this stage though, even if he does get a couple bites off it, he just ends up gagging himself with it... lol.

Pat his little hand and tell him no if you dont want him to do it.

Iam a big believer in a time and a place for all things. He should use a spoon if hes so inclined, its good for his development, however, so is actually eating food. Theres a time for him to try and try to feed himself, and a time for him to be fed by you. Once you decide when those times are, stick to them :)

You might look into those little dipper utensils. They grab food with grooves, letting baby feed himself. My 8 month old has been this stubborn since she was 6 months old, and we have just continued patience. Now she is pretty good at connecting spoon to mouth with food on it.

Yes, encourage it! I actually gave my son his own spoon and used another to feed him. Sometimes we switched spoons mid-feeding, but it worked!
