I have noticed that some roads have 'unadopted' written underneath their signs and some have 'adopted'. What does this mean?

It means the local council have not adopted the road and whoever owns property along it is jointly responsible with all the other property owners for carrying out maintenance and upkeep of the road. If it was adopted the council would be responsible.

An unadopted road, officially, is one the local authority hasn't accepted responsibility for. On an adopted road they deal with cleaning, maintenance, street lights etc., if it isn't adopted it's down to the residents.

Unadopted means that the council won't do zip about maintenance and it's up to the people who live on the road to maintain it.

Where I live local businesses "adopt" a road. They can post the name of the business on the sign and then they are responsible for keeping it looking nice, such as picking up trash, etc.

It means that people like you and me or regular business can 'adopt' a specific road and they have a certain stretch that they are responsible for when it comes to cleaning. When they do this, they have to pay a certain amount for it, but in return they get their name on the side of the road on a sign.

Basically the council does not own the land that the road is on, nor do they maintain it, usually the unadapted roads are in pretty poor condition

Many groups "adopt" a section of highway, and take the responsibility of picking up litter several times a year to keep it looking nice.

No one owns any part of it.Its not on any part of peoples
deeds, the local council will not maintain it,but people
usually have a right of way.The road will be usually be in a bad
state of prepare, the utility company's have a right to dig it up
for such as repairs. If you park on it though, just watch the
people living on the road telling you to move,my sister
