My friend suffers excruciating pain during some months she gets her period. Some months are better than others. For those bad months, she can hardly walk and is practically bedridden. A few months ago we had to take her to the hospital because the pain was unbearable for her. She got really sick and was vomiting every time she ate.

The doctors cannot seem to diagnose the problem. This has been happpening for about 2 years now and we still don't know what the cause is.

Have any of you ladies experienced similar problems and if so, what did you do to correct it.

endometriosis... look it up online, or cyst on her ovaries

Symptoms of endometriosis
The most common symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain. The pain often correlates to the menstrual cycle, however a woman with endometriosis may also experience pain at other times during her monthly cycle.

For many women, but not everyone, the pain of endometriosis can unfortunately be so severe and debilitating that it impacts on her life significant ways.

Pain may be felt:

before/during/after menstruation
during ovulation
in the bowel during menstruation
when passing urine
during or after sexual intercourse
in the lower back region
Other symptoms may include:

diarrhoea or constipation (in particular in connection with menstruation)
abdominal bloating (again, in connection with menstruation)
heavy or irregular bleeding
fatigue

Endometriosis, I've had it for 5 years now. It's totally treatable, she'll most likely be on a birth control pill - that'll help with the pain. I take narcotics because BCP's give me a bad reaction. If she has insurance, have her see a specialist called a reproductive endocrinologist. They specialize in things like this. Even most OBGYN's don't have a whole lot of experience in dealing with endometriosis so a regular ER doc would have even less.
Tell her not to worry, it's treatable and she can preserve her fertility.
OH - have her ask her doctor about Meclomen. Tell her it makes her period really light, less of a period causes less pain. The vomiting is most likely from the intense pain, most bodies can't handle that. My nausea is getting pretty bad too, but I'm having surgery in 3 weeks so hopefully that'll help.
Sorry - some of this may seem a little gross for you. You're a great friend, she's lucky to have you. Tell her she can e-mail me anytime if she wants more information.

I started taking the pill and it helped with the pain of my period and helped to make my period lighter. I can now be a normal person while on my period unlike I was a few years ago when I couldn't do anything. See if that would help her bc I know what she's going through.

My best friend had a similar problem. Her periods were INTENSE and sometimes she would go three months without a period and then would have one for 2 months straight. (she was not sexually active so she was not pregnant, etc)

The problem was that she was passing clots (during menstruation) that were too large. They were large enough to actually put her in labor. Her body would be in labor trying to pass these large clots (as big as a premature baby).

When she is on birth control pills, it is controlled and much less painful/debillitating.

Best of luck and it takes a great friend to help ask for her. :)

When I had symptoms like this, I had endometriosis. The first doctor I went to did not want to diagnose or treat me for this. He just wanted to give me medicine for cramping, which I already told him did not work. So I went to a different doctor and he diagnosed me right away and started treating me with Lupron Depot shots. I had to have one shot a month for 9 months. It cleared up my endometriosis and I felt 100% better.

Your friend needs to go to a new gynecologist. Try to find one that knows about endometriosis and knows how to treat it because not all doctors know much about it or want to treat it.

This may sound dumb to you--extra strength Pamprin works wonders. I put up with masses of pain for years without a solution or a name for it and meds did not work. I still had a back set years later and found the Pamprin works wonders. Just a thought.

I know that a common solution to really bad cramps is to get put on birth control. My doctor said that it usually helps. I know that some people have it worse, so maybe it would just lessen the pain, but it sounds like she would take whatever she can get.
