This question is for my wife. She stopped breast feeding 11 days ago and still is in pain (as least one side is engorged) She is wondering when it will end? When does the body stop producing milk, and return to normal? This is our second daughter and my wife breast fed her for 1 3/4 years, so she knew stopping would not be an overnight "return to normal" but does anybody know?

She did slow down 3 weeks before totally stopping, but has not giving in since. Our girl is also doing great seems like she totally understands, and is very cute about the whole situation.

on the breast that is engorged try expressing alittle milk out by hand ,just to relieve some of the pressure. you don't want them to get mastitis(not sure of spelling) . not much, the less you express the less you produce.you just have that extra milk in there. weaning is a gradual thing. just try it. GOOD LUCK

Well she did a good job. Although i think she should have already been winding down naturally to a weaning, unless she was still feeding 4-6 times a days and in full production and stopped cold turkey. To have stopped 11 days ago and still be engorged worries me, don't sound right. Maybe a bacterial bug has got in and she has mastitus of which she should go for medical advice and anti-biotics asap. Hope all is ok soon.

Weaning should happen gradually. Without a gradual reduction in nursing the baby and the mother's body are traumatized. She needs to maybe first limit baby to just night time or nap time feeding and then none at all. She can also take sage which will encourge the milk to stop being produced

a few weeks for sure.. especially since she breast fed for that long. Did you breast feed your first? Didnt the same thing happen? If you are concerned, you can call your doctor. but otherwise... the pain and engorgement is normal.

I don't know how long the pain will last, I didn't have a lot of pain when I weaned mine, but warm showers, or warm washcloths, my help, along with some tylenol. Did she stop cold turkey, or was it a gradual wean to 1 or 2 times a day?

she can try binding her breasts with an ace bandage, pressure can slow the production of milk. Don't express the milk, it will only cause the breast to continue production. Ice packs can help the swelling. Some people say yo put whole cold cabbage leaves in your bra to bring comfort, I never liked it myself. It will go down soon, believe me. She can also talk to her dr, there are meds to help dry up milk faster.

It can take time. I know there are herbal supplements you can take to speed up drying up. Warm compresses, and cabbage leaves used on the breasts(seriously) are supposed to help relieve some of the pain.
