Assuming that you mean the really, really bright object in the west just after sunset, that's a planet, not a star. It's Venus, oft referred to as the "evening star" or the "morning star", depending upon where it is at in its orbit in relation to the Earth.

The answer is Venus. It's by far the brightest object you can see in the western sky shortly after sundown. (Other than the moon, of course.)

The brightest true star in the southwestern sky right now shortly after sunset is Regulus, in Leo the Lion. Regulus, however, is far dimmer than Venus, and you'd have to wait until the sky is quite dark to spot Regulus. After it gets dark, look west, and you'll see in a long line across the west to southwest Venus, Saturn and Regulus all in a row, with Regulus the dimmest.

By the way, you only have about one month remaining in which to catch a glimpse of Venus. By mid-July, it will vanish into the sun's glare, and in about three months re-emerge into the morning skies (later for observers in the Southern Hemisphere).

It depends on where you are. From So.Calif. looking almost south-west at about 30 degrees up is the International Space Station (ISS). Look at it with some good binoculars and if it is you will be able to make out it's shape. If it's just round it's probably Venus.
