Skynyrd has to take the crown. I think Allman Brothers, Atlanta Rythym Section and the Fabulous Thunderbirds are all good choices. Technically, REM and the B-52s started in Athens, GA in the 70s, but I don't think that is what you are looking for.

New bands to check out in this area are: Drive By Truckers and Widespread Panic.

That's a tough one. But it's between CCR, Lynard Skynard, Allman Brothers, and The Band...how can you pick a definitive BEST from those 4??

It's a toss-up between The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Both have a great selection of songs, great musicians and a truly loyal following.

You can't include Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers. Skynyrd was a rock band with a country flavor and The Allmans were a blues band. So I would have to say The Outlaws.

I would have to vote for Lynyrd Skynyrd. First of all, they created one of the top 5 rock anthems of all time with Free Bird. Second, their list of credits is outstanding...Saturday Night Special, Gimme Back My Bullets, That Smell, obviously Sweet Home Alabama. They STILL sell out tours, and their songs have passed the test of time. I do like the Allman Brothers, but they do not have as big of a resume as Skynyrd.

no question, allman brothers band...duane allman was awesome, then his replacement (after his death) dickey betts was almost as good at guitar. they get it over skynard, the other obvious choice, because they really jammed awesomely live, and better musicians talent-wise i think.

ccr was more 60's then into the 70's, but i don't put them in the same category. loved marshall tucker band, but there's not enough to go by there compared to the two above.

I like all of the above bands but Marshall Tucker was good too!
