I never knew my dad growing up, but after receiving a football scholarship on of my teammates knew someone with the same name in a different part of the state, it turned out to be my biological dad!!!! I saw him first at age 22, he was living with my grandmother, and driving an Expedition, had nice stuff, ect. I am now a HS teacher and now owe student loans for my masters.
Would it be wrong to try to collect back child support to pay them off and how do I go about collecting... ect..

You are an adult, back child support is only a factor if you are still a minor. You need to build a relationship with him and let him choose to help you finacially by his own chose!

Sounds like a winner to me if you don't mind the hassle of trying to get it. He owes back child support so personally I don't think your age should have anything to do with it. Rest assured he won't want anything else to do with you but then you've done well without him up to this point.
Was there a child support order issued years ago? See if you can get a copy from the courts and go see a lawyer. Be sure and keep a copy of the order for your own records and let the lawyer make copies for his files.
Angers me how parents sit back and ignore their responsibilities like this. And I have heard of a few cases in the past where the person had to pay even though the person was an adult. You might need your mother to go with you and file the suit. It sure won't hurt to try ~ all they can tell you is no.
Your mother is to be praised that you grew up so well and made something of yourself.
Good luck and God bless

Well, in some states your parent has to pay child support until you graduate college or until you are 21, if you go to college. But typically thats only when the parent you live with asks for child support when you are under the age of 18. So, if she didnt have a order before you were 18, no you cant. But if she did he still owes that money and one or both of you could file to get it but he probably owes 20,000+ dollars so collecting that will be nearly impossible.

Right or wrong is a moral decision. Your LEGAL recourse is absolutely nothing. And never was.
You were the SUBJECT of any support order, not a party thereto. Therefore, you have no legal standing.
If your mother had a support order and did not file a motion to show cause for contempt regarding any unpaid support, then her failure to act has closed the case based on the statute of limitations.
If there was never a support order, one cannot not be issued.
EDITED BASED ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Then you need to speak with your mother and find out in what jurisdiction (state) the order was issued. The matter of statute of limitations on collections comes into play, especially if she never filed for the arrears owed.
When you have that informtion email me and I'll post back.

My opinion: Why are you digging up something from the past - let the past be the past - move forward - or you will spend the next how many years fighting for child support(that the court won't do) - and being unhappy - move forward - don't look back.
thats my opinion.
also- if you met him at age 22 -- that means he was over 40 right? and living with his grandparents... just because he was driving a nice car - does not mean he has money - it means he has no rent/electricity/cable/telephone/ any household bills - All he has is money to spend on his expedition- and things for HIM ... do you want to be a part of that type of life??? he was living with granny at age 40+!!!
You sound like you are doing well for yourself - move on- leave all of that behind.

Since there was a child support order in place, he still owes the money, but it’s owed to MOM, not you. You can’t collect it to pay off student loans. Mom can collect it and then agree to give it to you for that, but why should she? The money is due to her to reimburse her for the extra expense she had when raising you (because Dad wasn’t paying his share as he was ordered to). Tell Mom to contact an attorney. And then DON’T ask her for the money. It’s hers.

Child support is not owed to the child it is owed to the mother. Unless you mother has an open case for child support and there is back support due, she has absolutely no claim.

the money would go to your mother not you. child support is repayment of what she has spent for that month on you. and yes it is to late if she did not try and collect before 18

Unless there was a prior support order that was never fulfilled nothing can be done. And you did not incur the costs of support for yourself when you were a minor YOUR MOTHER did.

You cannot sue your father for back child support, but your mother can.
If she is willing to sue him for back child support, then that's on her.
She might feel though, that she doesn't want his money, because she might feel that she did an extremely good job in taking care of you on her own.
