Nearly 95% or more is not fit for human consumption. The other answerer probably meant the percentage which is fit for consumption.

On our planet 97.4 percent (this is your answer) of the water is salt water, while a mere 2.5 percent is fresh water. Of the 2.5 percent fresh water, 70 perent has been locked up in ice sheets and glaciers.
But even salt water can be also made available for drinking now a days.... so this % varies every sec.

of all the water on the earth about 98% is unfit to drink as it is salty , deficient or highly concentrated in one or other mineral that makes it unfit to drink.but dont think that 2% is available for drinking. dear it is only 1% as rest of 1% is stored in the form of ice in glaciers and on poles

98% of water on earth is in ocean, u cant drink it
off the remaining 2%, 99.6% is in ice caps, ground water, air etc, so u cant have it tooo
the surface water is about 0.4%, of which swamps have 11%
so assuming water in lakes and rivers are potable, there is about 0.00712% of water is fit to drink
and 99.99288% of water is unfit for drinking
