If the Dolphins new they were going to get Trent Green, which they were 90% sure at draft time then why not build on Beck. They new they were going to get Trent Green from the Chiefs even if it cost them a fourth rounder. Having both Quinn and Green would give you a fight for number one. With Green coming in he is the #1 quarterback for a couple of years hopefully and Beck is always there for insurance/building until Green retires or gets hurt again. It was a surprise the Dolphins didn't take Brady Quinn, but knowing that they had Trent Green available they picked a needed position. Although it was a little early for Ted Ginn Jr. they definatly needed a wide receiver. I think it's way too early for people to start calling out the Dolphins decisions because we haven't seen Ginn yet, and we haven't seen Quinn yet. Vonnie Holliday needs to keep his mouth shut, worry about himself, and play some football rather than bashing on the new rookie. I hope Ginn shines and everyone, including Holliday eats there words.

The Dolphins' three biggest needs going into the draft arguably were OT, WR and QB (with TE and defensive depth being the next tier of issues.) After Joe Thomas and Levi Brown were taken at #3 and #5, that left WR and QB. And WR Calvin Johnson was not an option.

If the Dolphins had reservations about taking Quinn, then they definitely should have had reservations about taking him at #9. If the Fins knew that either Culpepper or Green were going to be their starters, they had the luxury of not having to reach for a QB at #9.

So they took the WR that was the best left on most draft boards, Ted Ginn. If healthy (and that's a big "if"), he's less of a reach at #9 than Quinn. Hey, sometimes teams don't get their best possible options laid out before them & they have to make do with what they have.

They could have gotten better value if they didn't have such strong needs at certain positions. On defense, their starters are very good & they need depth and developmental players, which can be gotten later in the draft. Maybe DE Adam Carricker could have lined up opposite Jason Taylor, or RB Marshawn Lynch could have been a one-two punch with Ronnie Brown, or CBs Darelle Revis or Leon Hall could have bolstered the secondary. But since they had such question marks at those three positions, they had to make a reach.

Well I think the Dolphins only drafted John Beck for a back up right now, or somebody to have if they couldn't for some reason get Trent Green. They wanted Ted Ginn to have a play maker, to the displeasure of many Dolphins fans who wanted Quinn. I don't think it makes that big of difference. Trent Green will stick around for what, 2 seasons? Maybe 3...Maybe John Beck will be ready to step into the role when he retires. So basically, if their plan that whole time was to get Green and a big offensive/special teams play maker, I'd have done what they did, but I would have traded down a few spots to get Ginn I think....

With Culpepper on the roster and a strong probability of getting Trent Green, I would have done the same thing.

One thing that is getting lost in this is Miami obviously DIDN'T think Brady Quinn was worth a no.9 pick or they would have taken him. Choosing to wait to round two means that (1) the QB they wanted was gone, (2) no other QB was worth that high of a pick/1st round pick, or (3) They couldn't trade down and get him later.

Either way, Quinn and Beck are both high risks as rookies.

The dolphins really screwed up when they went Ginn Rd. 1

They went Ginn, Beck. To me, that is not a very intelligent move. Not only do they risk a great deal on a guy like Ginn,. but they use a second round pick on a guy that wasn't that high on many people's radars. Trent Edwards would have made more sense in that situation.

They should have:

Gone Quinn, Jarrett
Why? Quinn and Jarrett have more experience at their positions, and get the job done at their positions. It just doesn't make sense to me to pass on those guys. When Quinn and/or Jarrett are Pro-Bowlers, it will be a sad day

just my ten ccents

I get the feeling that the Dolphins wanted Beck - period. So they knew that he would be available in the second round, so they could do something different in the first round. A year ago, the Bears were being questioned about the stupidity of drafting Devin Hester - a man without a position - in the second round, and he was a pro bowler return man. Ginn, uninjured, was a no-brainer at the WR/KR/PR draft. But I wonder if his injury is more than anyone wants to let on....

The Dolphins know what they are doing.

Think about it they just picked up Joey Porter and now Trent Green when they have Zach thomas and Jason Taylor allready all tallented but Aging
They want to do good NOW!!
the have a whole lot of tallent NOW!!!
Brady Quinn still has to develope, he can't even make the Starting spot At Cleveland. How is he going to lead Miami to the playoffs.

Ted ginn instantantly made there ST a whole lot better (he knows how to return kicks doen't need to learn awhole lot, plus he has a whole lot of time to recover from his injury (that is deffinatley not carreer ending), and he has offensive potential,

I loved the pick of Beck, beacuse hes used to throwing alot in a pro style offense at BYU. Quinn was never that good at ND, he never won big games and choked quite abit. Without Samardja hes nothin. Ginn on the other hand was stupid, they have Chambers and probly could of gotten someone in the 2nd round like Jarrett, thats better and more proven, I think Ginn is too samll, maybe if he bulks up hell be servicible but he reminds me of a Dante Hall right now. I think beacuse of there aging Defense they should have gone with someone like Okoye, or Willis. But I do like the Beck pick, now that they have Trent Green it will give him a year of grooming.
