In a 50 meter pool: 16.1 laps (1609.34 meters)

The FINA specifications for an Olympic swimming pool are as follows:
Length: 50 m
Width: 25 m
Number of lanes: 8
Lane width: 2.5 m

So based on FINA regulations, there ya go. If your pool is yards it will be slightly more but most standard Oly sized pools are meters.

In a 50 yard pool: 17.6 laps (1760 yards)

It depends.

The term "Olympic sized pool" gets abused by marketing people who don't understand the concept. Most pools that are said to be "Olympic pool" aren't.

That being said, according the FINA rules, the pools used in the Olympics are 50m. That's about a 11.5 inches short of 55 yards.
Sixteen (16) laps is 1 749+ yards. That's about 11 yards short of a mile.
