A human is truly a human as long as s/he lives. Perhaps you would like to be more specific for example what are the different personalities of human beings, what makes a human behaves the way s/he behaves, is a dead body still a human, what major problems change the character of a human, why do humans commit evil acts, questions like these.

Why not take the example of your own question to start with? Then what puts a man on the path of becoming true human, in terms of a better person, is his ability to think, think about himself progressively, in comparison with the people around him.

We all are endowed with qualities and characteristics that make us what we are in our own peculiar ways, but that does not mean that we are the way we can be within the capacities often unexplored in human nature. We do not have any other means of knowing if we are really what we could be - instead of just trying to be ourselves - other than closest observations of and affiliations with fellow human beings. We are great studies for each other, and also sources of inspiration. No one knows what is the ultimate standard of a true human, but we have examples to enlighten us along. Some people are better than other and some are better than many. They inspire us to do better in our lives the way we can. We can all be different, but our objective is the same: to be what we can be in a best possible way we can find.
