I would say try and treat everyone the way you would want to be treated yourself, even if they are nasty to you.
If someone is nasty to me, I just ignore them. I wouldn't waste my time or energy in being nasty back to them since they are clearly not worth it.
I don't really hold with the "eye for an eye" philosophy because at the end of the day, being horrible to someone who has been horrible to you doesn't help anyone and doesn't make you feel any better as a person.

No. Absolutely not. I honestly get tired of people saying "But the bible says an eye for an eye." Correction. The Old Testament says an eye for an eye. Once the Christchild fulfilled his prophecy, the Old Testament is no longer accepted doctrine. We now live by The New Testament, which is "Turn the other cheek."
While I personally have not fully embraced the turn the other cheek philosophy, I believe to not adopt it partially would cause outright chaos. When I feel that I have been wronged, I make sure the offending party knows how I feel, but that's as far as I go.
Vengeance and / or revenge is futile and cyclical. Where does it end? Who wronged who more? Joey slapped your sister, so you and three friends go to beat Joey's *** in front of his boys so his ego is hurt, so he has to come back and kill you, to which your sister need to seek validation, and so on, and so on.
In the end, I have found I am much happier knowing that the bad people are just that, bad. Rest easy in knowing that you are the better person.

Hi,
For the good I think you mean if people are good to us should we be good back ... of course.
If people are bad to us do we treat them in the same way ... no. Not at all. That's how wars are started. I hate any kind of hostility. I cannot bring myself to be impolite even when people are rude and uncaring. No, I don't think an eye for an eye is a good philosphy to live by. I would rather turn the other cheek.

That's in the Old Testament. The New Testament is about love and compassion. Besides the eye for an eye quotation has a deeper meaning than just what you read. So I say no.

I think we need to be (for a lack of a better way to put it) above that. People who treat others poorly should be told about their actions and shown how they hurt people, but they will not learn what right is if people don't treat them right.

YES!!! If I was treating someone poorly I would expect the same treatment. Think how it feels if someone hurts you, do you like it? probably not. So why would you want to do it to someone??

Yes, I believe people do things to others without realizing the harm they do to others, if they same was done unto them, I think they would rethink their actions

sadly, i think its natural for many people to react that way to others...personally, though, i try to turn the other cheek...an eye for an eye will make us all blind...
