Here in California there is way too many people who do not speak english. I don't really care that they don't speak english, its just that some people roll their eyes and get mad when I can't speak their language. Now that really grinds my gears! Thanks for your answer!

It doesn't anger me; it just annoys me. Nearly everyone where I live speaks Spanish and very little English. *Grinds my gears* (I like that phrase) I know a little Spanish but not enough. It's sort of like *I* have to learn their language and they don't make any effort to learn ENGLISH. It's like, HELLO, you're in AMERICA. At least TRY to learn our language!

yes it does. Part of functioning in a society is speaking the language. Others can scream diversity and we all came from somewhere blahblahblah (those generations learned english by the way) but it is part of it like it or not. They can at least make an effort for crying out loud so theres not a series of grunts and pointing when they go to a store. I dont care if there is fluency, just enough to get along would be fine.

Oh yes...I live in Queens , NY...I think over the last 20 years of being here I've become the minority...I wouldn't so much care , but where I work people actually get mad at me for not being able to speak Spanish. I have nothing against Spanish people...my husband is Puerto Rican...but come on...his Grandmother has been in NY for 30 years and can't speak a lick of English...and is angry at me for not wanting to teach my daughter Spanish. If I was going to teach her anything , it would be Japanese...that's where the money is , lol.

Almost everyone around me doesn't speak English. But as long as they use English when talking to me, I don't really care what language they chat in when I'm gone.

I know what you mean. I live in a area w/ a lot of Europeans who are from the same country and they probably feel they don't have to learn how to speak english because they all speak their own language and they don't have to adjust.

Nope, the majority of people in my area speak Gaelic. English is the 2nd language taught in schools.

It only bothers me when they work in a service position, like at a fast-food restaurant and they can't communicate well enough to get my order straight. It never bothered me that non-English speakers were building my house or putting my landscaping in. If I had a problem, I called their boss and everything was fine. But if you're in a service-oriented position, you should be able to understand the people you're serving.

Yes. It makes me mad because most can speak English but wont. What makes me madder is when they say we should learn their language instead. What country do they think they're living in?
