Only reason I spit in urinals is because that's where I am, and I need to spit. Can't spit on the floor, and I'm not going to the toilet just to spit.
It goes down the same drain, so there's no harm. I need to spit, and it's one of the few acceptable places to do it.

I never noticed I did that until i read this question. I guess I like the freedom of spitting right there in the urinal since it is there.

Personally, I've never underdstood the need to spit. But, at least it's in a toilet, there is nothing worse than seeing someone spit in the middle of the street.
