Newspapers are large inexpensive paper sheets; so instead of writing all across such pages, the editors are told to produce columns, vertical strips a few inches wide; some longer stories must becontinued on back pages; others can be finished in a part of a column.
In another section of a newspaper, people paid to write an anlysis or even idea-level thoughful, or humorous stores on a regular or guest basis are given a certain length of wordawe to write; they are called "columnists" because, at one time, they had to finsih their writing within one single newspaper page's vertical column.
