It's a tad more complicated than you'll generally be told.

When the sun's core is depleted of hydrogen and rich in hydrogen, the sun will have hydrogen fusion in outer layers. The sun's core will eventually reach a state where helium fusion in the core will start (triple alpha process) as well. [red giant and following stages]

The sun will eventually loose it's outer layers and have depleted helium in the remaining core; it'll then dwindle away as a white dwarf (rich in carbon and oxygen).

the death of a star is a long, drawn out affair, it begins when the star loses the high temperature required to continue fusion of heavier elements. outward radiation pressure is still high enough to overcome the stars gravity and the star begins to expand, this expansion continues until the fuel runs out and radiation drops, then gravity kicks in and the star collapse inward and becomes a white dwarf, this process take millions of years.

the suns energy will eventually run out and it will grow into a red giant and will engulf the 1st 2 planets and get so close to us it will evaporate the oceans then after that it will shrink to a white dwarf and will freeze the earth then after a billion years it will collapse upon itself and cause a black hole thus obliterating the rest of our solar system but hofully we will be outta here by then

When a star converts all of its hydrogen fuel to helium and heavier elements, it can no longer sustain the fusion reaction that keeps it hot.
