tool

One who lacks the mental capacity to know he is being used. A fool. A cretin. Characterized by low intelligence and/or self-steem.

Lol

Tool sometimes refers to someone being a jerk OR someone who is easily used by another person.... like a tool to do things that another person would not want credit for doing. It's sort of like saying someone has no mind of their own. OR it's like referring to that appendage that only boys have, which brings us back to the first definition. It's not a nice label at all.

The way that it's being used by the boys in your grade sounds like it more like sarcastic horseplay. Boys like to insult one another for fun. (btw, this doesn't stop as men get older, they just get more creative with it). It goes along with the fact that most boys like the Three Stooges.

In the context you give... it is a derogotory term, somewhat friendly though. It is like calling them a dork, only not as bad as a dork.

I think it got its origin from a TV show "Home Improvement, where the main character, Tim "the Toolman" Taylor, tried to be a cool guy, but was always screwing something up. The term "tool" has been around for many years -- it has become mroe popular, lately.

The word "tool" may be used as an insult, describing someone who is being used by an establishment willingly (as a sycophant), unwillingly (as one who blindly conforms), or as a "geek".
