It is behind the wall in my mothers bathroom. I have not yet been there but I know that I have to knock a piece of the wall to see the pipe.

If it is galvanized steel pipe, I would try to replace it. A leak in this type pipe indicates that it is rusting from the inside outwards and will continue to have problems. Being inside a wall, you would need to leave a patched pipe accessible to make sure it doesn't spring another leak.

your right, you will need to cut a square piece of sheetrock out of the wall to be able to look with a flashlight and see where the leak is coming from. Once the leak is found you can either repair it yourself if you can solder copper, or call a plumber in your area....

if you know someone with a moisture meter you can use it to find the part of the wall that is the wettest and the leak will be near by
