Here is the break down: weeks 1 thru 4 = 1st month, 5 thru 8 = 2nd month, 9 thru 12 = 3rd month, 13 thru 16 = 4th month, 17 thru 20 = 5th month, etc...

The first month starts when you start your last period and ends at 4 weeks. The second month starts at 4 weeks and ends at 8 weeks, etc. So the 5th month would start at 16 weeks and end at 20 weeks. A pregnancy is 40 weeks which if you use 4 week months makes it 10 months. I just lent my What to Expect book to a friend so I can't look at it, but I think they add in a week at the end of the 3rd month, so actually the 5th month starts at 17 weeks. You're not actually 5 months pregnant until the end of the 5th month. Does that make sense, I'm not sure I've explained it that well.

weeks 1-4 are your first month. 5-8 are month 2. 9-12 month 3, 13-16 are month 4 and 17-20 month five, or there abouts because there aren't exactly 4 weeks in as month.

There are not four weeks in a month (except for February)--there are two or three extra days tacked on. So your pregnancy is NOT ten months, but it is between a week and two weeks past nine months.
Don't sweat it--it's a 40 week pregnancy no matter how many "months" you calculate it to be. I always told people how many weeks along I was and what my due date was--I never talked in months....

At 18 weeks, you are 2 weeks into your 5th month. Technically, when you are 1 week pregnant, you're in your 1st month. The 5th week is the first week of your 2nd month, etc, etc... It's confusing, I know. I'm 10 weeks pregnant, myself. Which, seems like 2 1/2 months, but I'm in the first week of my 3rd month. It's a lot easier to track by weeks instead of months.

Pregnancy has always been said to be 9 months, when it is actually 10. 40 weeks is the full lenght of human guestation. Most months have 4 weeks in them, but some have 5. It is really difficult to calculate by month, which is why most docs use weeks.

It's confusing but a pregnancy is still said to be "40 weeks" (that was the traditional belief) even though most babies are born at 38 weeks past conception.
So that's why doctors and pregnancy books always seem to put you further along than you are. It's just to fit you into the 40 week formula.

You are actually pregnant for 10 months from start to finish from your last cycle. I am 22 weeks and in the middle of my 6th month. It is confusing - my suggestion - don't worry about what month you are - go by the weeks. That is what Dr.'s go by and how to calculate how long you have left and also what trimester you are in. Just worry about the weeks.

glad you asked this question. I have that book and I was reading it and I didn't understand why it said I was 5 months along when I wasn't. I just go by the weeks so i wouldn't be confused.
