where do the government get these figures from?
i wish i was on the average wage as it would mean a large boost to my income
27k has been reported but that is no-where near the average in this region

the first answer obviously comes from a sewer rat how someone can make assumptions such as these is beyond belief.

i've worked all my life since i left school, went to collage.
studied while working and acquired several qualifications,
unfortunately south wales does not have the opportunities many other areas have

I know what you mean. I work in retail - Store Manager salaries really take the p**s.

It is average. If I made 27K I couldn't even afford my rent! Thankfully I make much more than that but the point is regional averages vary widely, making the national average barely relevant. It's only a number.

If we adjusted our salaries for purchasing power (the amount of goods we could buy in the area where we live), we might have very similar salaries. That's called "Real Wages" and is a much more accurate measure for economic purposes than average wages.

Maybe they get the info from Inland Revenue. Its probably a mean average, the few on super high salaries skew it slightly.
