You can use fastweb and collegeboard to find colleges.
You should also google for U.S. News and World Reports information about colleges and The Princeton Review to see how colleges are ranked.

The best information about a college will usually be on that college's website so once you have a general idea of a few colleges you might be interested in just google them and read up on their sites. It will seem like a lot of information at first but once you've been through one site you'll realize they're all pretty much the same and you'll be able to find the information that you need faster.

Another option is just to start googling for names of colleges in your area or to go to the websites for ACT or SAT testing and use their lists of colleges as a starting point. They should have colleges listed by state.

US News & World report publishes a book/large magazine with annual rankings, and also has info on their web site, although some of it you have to pay for.
