When you wipe it clean, you wipe it clean:-) Your best route is to backup your files (music, documents etc.) on to a CD, backup drive etc. and then wipe your disk clean.
Alternately, if your PC has a "Restore and recover" system, back up the files that you need and restore your system. This will bring it to the factory setting and then you can apply the Windows patches and reinstall your other programs.
If you do have a restore and recovery system, it is a good idea to create "safe points". These are points you know are safe. So, if your PC gets corrupted, you know that something that you installed (or did) after the last safe point is the culprit. you can restore upto the last (or the desired) safe point and then you'll only have to restore files from then on. Each system varies in how to create these safe points. Consult your PC maker.

You can't.
Back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) and do a Windows "Clean Install", get more info at (www.theeldergeek.com).
Note: Use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, not a generic XP disk. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, RTFM.

If using xp,just restart under SafeMode with networking,go to www.trendmicro.com and do an online virus scan, after virus is deleted, restart normally, and delete your cookie, tmp, cache files etc. This will improve your pc performance, and you will be able to keep all your files.Keeping files from an infected system makes little sense
