It can't happen and it never has happened. There is a certain type of fire that will burn a person almost completely to nothing. It's an odd fire in that it can burn a person to a small pile of ash yet leave the room he was in with little damage. This is what has led to the myth that people have self combusted. However, it has been shown through forensic science and experiments with pig's bodies that the victim died or passed out with a small fire on their person, usually aided by an accelerant like alcohol, and burned very slowly like a candle with the fire feeding off of body fat.

They don't. There has never been a proven incident od spontaneous combustion. In all cases, there has either been a source of igniton proximate to the victim, or a flame and alcohol.

What has been discovered is that when someone is trapped in a fire, their body fat can melt into cloth (such as an easy chair) and turn even non flammable materials flammable.

You either have smokers falling asleep setting themselves on fire with lit cigarettes, or drunks falling asleep in front of a fireplace.

There is much conjecture on whether this phenomena actually happens... I believe that the "Mythbusters" on TLC or Discovery have de-bunked the myth.
