The "easiest" scale to learn is the PENTATONIC scale. You'll find most songs use this scale,in all kinds of music!!! I'm not sure if you're talking guitar...if not transpose the guitar scale to the notes on your instrument...major=happy minor=sad.theres an easy way to start off your plan of attack!! Then you can worry about "root notes"..adding 7ths...drone(sometimes called pedal tones)..basically an open string that rings through out the scale you're playing.Want a EASY way to do this?Drop tune your fat E string down to "D"..now play the first 3 strings open...add your pentatonic "scale" or notes on top of it...and there you go,a Pentatonic scale with a root note...theres a good place to start, you'll sound like you know what you're doing and it might open up the rest of the scales and modes for you, just by practicing!! Hope this is what you were talking about....as far as advanced or intermediate...(phrygian mode, aeleon, mixolydian) are considered "tougher"by most teachers....Good luck!!

Which instrument?? Start with C scale (no flats, no sharps). Google "Circle of Fifths" to find all the scales and their key signatures and how they relate.
