you can but kits with all the right shades of polish and it shows you how to do it... there arent to expensive to buy... they also come with sticker things to separte the colours... if you dont wanna buy that then
Step 1: It's essential to prepare your hands and nails before applying nail polish.
First, exfoliate your hands by massaging them using a small amount of body scrub.
Rinse with water and dry thoroughly. One of the main causes of chapped hands
is not drying them properly after washing.
Step 2: File your nails. If they are brittle or tend to split, keep them flat
across the top with smooth, rounded edges. When filing, move in one
direction, from outer corner to centre. Sawing movements can damage
the nail plate. Choose a nail file with a fine surface that glides over the nail.
Step 3: Coat hands in a layer of sweet almond oil, to norish and soften,
then wrap in a warm towel and relax for 15 minutes. Unwrap, and gently
push back cuticles using a rubber hoof stick (available from most chemists).
Never use cuticle clippers, as they can nick the skin. Rinse hands with warm
water and dry thoroughly to remove any oil residue.
Step 4: Apply one coat of base coat over your entire nail and allow
a couple of minutes to dry. This will help strengthen the nail.
Some products also level fine ridges and imperfections, leaving a smooth
surface to apply polish. There's a wide range of base coats to choose from.
Step 5: For a square look, paint a straight line across the tips;
for a rounded appearance, follow the curve of the nail; and to get a pointed
style, paint in from each side to the centre. Some manicure kits include
sticky strips to use as a guide. When applying, lay your hand on a flat surface
and keep the ball of your painting hand steady and keep the ball of your
painting hand steady by resting it on the same surface. Leave to dry.
Step 6: Finally, apply a coat of translucent shell-pink nail polish
over the entire nail to seal the whitened tip and complete the look.
Allow 10 minutes for it to dry. For extra shine and protection,
apply a clear, glossy top coat.
hope this helps!

Some people say put the base color on first, but it looks a lot nicer if you do the white part first.
Buy a bright white shade of nail polish, then a really sheer light tan/pink shade, and a clear topcoat. Sephora sells a really good kit with all three of these shades in cute tiny bottles (because, really, who actually uses an entire big bottle of nail polish, ever!?)
Paint a strip of white at the tip of each nail, that bends with the natural shape of your nail. If you have short nails make this strip a little bigger than the usual white part of your nail... if your nails are long make it only as long as the white part of your nail. You have to have a really steady hand for this part! It might help to have someone else do it for you, like a friend. Don't use little sticky strips though to help, they just make things messy.
Let that dry really well then paint one coat of the tan/pink over top of each nail. It won't cover up the white, I promise. It will even your nails out and make them look really smooth and nice.
Once that dries put the clear topcoat on to make them shinier. And then you're done and you have pretty, sophisticated nails! You don't need to go to a salon to get this done, it is definitely possible to do yourself if you practice. Good luck!

The fastes way, my Na taught me.
1. Clean your nails , top and underside.
2. Run a white eyebrow pencil along the underside of your nail.
3. Polish with a pale pink or clear.
Quick and cheap, it just makes your nails look clean.
But the other answers are good if you want to spend the money.

You can buy stickers that go across your nail to separate the white from the pink. All you have to do is put that on your nail along the natural line and paint it white. Make sure it dries and the you can peel it off and put clear on. If you get really good you can do it free handed.

the best way is to get them done. but there are some little tool kits to help you do them, or i have heard of cutting a piece of tape to fit around your nail so that when you put on the white tip, it will be neat.

French manicure :
palest palest pink first coat
then paint tips only with white
then cover with a coat of clear gloss
A lovely look - but time consuming to do!
