It is all based on the number 10 and conversions from mil-, cent, deci- are just moving the decimal point.
The metric system is used in almost every country in the world, except the US.
Medicine and other science have been metric for many years now.
It is more logical. a kilo = the weight of one liter of water.

Hi Amber,
The websites below give loads of advantages.
The main ones are:-
All the world (except some in the US & UK) use it. The UK & US signed up to go metric in 1875, but have been dozy in making the transition.
The SI is built in such a way that only one unit is used for each kind of quantity, which makes the system very simple. Why measure beer in pints, wine in litres, petrol in US gallons?
There are no conversions required between units of the same property (unlike 12 inches / foot, 3 feet / yard, 220 yards / furlong, 8 furlongs / mile, 5,878,625,373,184 miles / light year); the distances between atoms or galaxies are all measured in metres, with prefixes (based on powers of ten) to bring the numbers to a manageable size.

Because our number system is base ten, it is easier to convert metric measurements than English measurements.
If our number base system were base seven, the metric system would not be easier.

It is based on units of 10. So much easier then say 1/4 inch. It makes calculations easier as well. Use it all the time in nursing.
