My buddy Frankie lost his arms in a horrific woodchipping accident a few years ago. We got into a major fight last night because he came over to my apartment and wanted to see the Yankees game. I said "here catch" and gently tossed the remote to him. I forgot about his armlessness and it smacked him in the neck. He got upset and said I was inconsiderate. He said I am insensitive and brought up a story from last year where we went on a road trip to Boston and I told him to drive. He says thats not funny. I feel bad for hurting him, but shouldn't he have more of a sense of humor? Its not like hating the world will help his arms to grow back!

hmmm, He does sound as if he is being a little bit over reactive to me, but I never lost a limb either.

As his friend I guess you need to be careful not to say things that upset him. He could be more mature about it but since he isn't you deal with it as it is, not as you wish it was.

My brother lost both of his arms at the age of 17. I'll tell you, we can not even fathom what they go through every day. Even with the new technology with prosthetics. Unfortunately, 9 years later we are losing my brother to methanphetamines.

I don't have any advice on how to deal with your friend, I don't know if what we have done has been right. We tend to just accept it as an everyday part of life, help him where he needs help and stand our ground on the things he doesn't need help on but wants it.

Just think about everything, 24 hrs/day without hands. From peeing in the morning, to opening doors, soda/beer bottles, working on computer, video games, getting dressed, brushing teeth, shaving, eating a piece of pizza, answering your cell phone before you miss the call etc. etc. etc.

It is up to Frankie whether or not he has a sense of humor...not you. If Frankie does not have a sense of humor, do not try to be funny.

And if this scenario is true, I do not believe for an instant that a FEW YEARS after an accident like that...you have FORGOTTEN?

If this scenario is true, you are not only insensitive, you are heartless, and need your @ss kicked!

I don't think you're insensitive, I mean, he still has his other arm, right? Most people who have an impediment such as that just learn to adapt by using one hand. The other hand could have caught the remote, people drive with one hand all the time. Maybe he is still really sensitive about it and so he takes offense easily. Either way you'll have to talk to him about it and just explain that you are just joking or being sarcastic.

If it bothers him I'd stop trying to humor him ...just try talking to him about the humor ordeal,if hes closed to the idea maybe its an issue
not worth resolving.
