It sets forth that any illegal alien in the country at the time the law is passed is granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for $5,000. Then, the person must return to his or her home country, but for another pretty hefty fine (I think it's another $5,000, but I'm not sure), the U.S. will process his or her application to become a U.S. citizen.

Since it's fairly common knowledge that illegal aliens work for pitiful wages under the table... where are they going to get this kind of money?

And since we aren't even enforcing our CURRENT immigration laws, what happens to those illegal aliens who refuse to step forward? What is the penalty for breaking yet another of our laws?

civil: Yes, and how long did it take them to save up that kind of money? And you think they're going to be willing to go back to their own country to await potential U.S. citizenship when they paid that much to get out?

There is no answer because it is a flaw.

1. The $5K is only for those who want to be citizens.
2. Why should we think the government will enforce this? They do not and will not enforce existing laws.

I support the bill because:
1. Our border enforcement has been to lax and this bill improves on that.
2. We let businesses employ illegal workers for 20 years with very lax enforcement (note that these American employers are also breaking the law, but I don't see anyone crying about amnesty for illegals calling for prosecution of American business owners - why is that?). This bill beefs enforcement up, but allows businesses to hire the workers they need on the up and up.
3. The immigration policy we've had the last 20 years was inadeqaute to the needs of our economy. We should have let enough workers in legally, instead of turning a blind eye to the problem and have it become and uncontrolled free-for-all. The point is a large percentage of the 'illegal' workforce is actually necessary and had our policies been correct we would have the workers we needed and they would be legal.

This bill takes into account that this mess was created in part by America have lax border control, by America having lax enforcement on business hiring illegal workers, by America having inadeqaute immigration policies to meet our needs and finally by the poor but willing and able immigrants taking full advantage of the situation. They are pursuing the American dream in the land of the free becasue we essentially opened the back door and asked them too.

There is the other problem of not really knowing who the 12 million are - after all they are undocumented. Identifying, Rounding up and deporting 12 million will be costly way beyond the benefits. Attemtping to do so will drive them deeper underground and probably generate even more crime and 'human trafficers'.

You may have statisfaction that the 'illegals' are gone, but you won't be able to get served in a restaurant or have your hotel room cleaned. Come to think of it those business will be closed becasuse their owners will be in jail for hiring illegal workers. You're the one wanting to stop amnesty to law breakers.

Bush - Good question! Sometimes you surprise me.
Good questions but lacking answers. I'm changing my mind about you again ;)

Civil_av8r - I have worked with illegals in the past and he too told me that he paid over 7,500 dollars to bring his wife and two kids across the border...and that was 10-11 years ago!

As for their wages, I've had people out West tell me that they get anywhere from $14.00 to $20.00 per hour for working out in the fields. When you travel the country and talk to people you get an entirely different story than what the newspapers give you

I do NOT support this bill. It is all BS, just political posturing to get slave labor for big corporations and to keep the minimum wage at a poverty level.

I've watched a lot of stories on illegal immigrants who have said time and time again they paid coyotes $5,000/$10,000 to bring them across the border to begin with.
